FLACHAU, Austria/January 09, 2018(AP)(STL.News) — Mikaela Shiffrin’s winning streak was under threat by Bernadette Schild after the Austrian posted the fastest time in the opening run of a women’s World Cup night slalom on Tuesday.
Unbeaten in all four races in 2018, the Olympic slalom champion from the United States struggled for rhythm throughout her run and finished 0.37 seconds behind Schild.
Frida Hansdotter of Sweden was 0.74 behind in third, while the rest of the field had to make up more than 1 1/2 seconds on the Austrian in the final run.
Two of Shiffrin’s main rivals for the season slalom title, Slovakia’s Petra Vlhova and Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener, failed to finish.
Shiffrin is looking for her 41st career victory.
