NEW YORK | Film explores Chinese Exclusion Act as US immigration ‘DNA’

NEW YORK (AP) — Politicians seizing on immigrants as an election issue. Newspaper headlines calling for action. Talk of legislation to institute a ban.

If viewers of “The Chinese Exclusion Act” documentary end up with a sense of deja vu between the film’s subject, a law from 1882 that barred Chinese people from coming to the United States, and current events, that’s pretty much the point, according to its filmmakers.

“The ‘A-Ha!’ for anybody coming to it … is oh, there’s a history to how we have decided who can come and when they can come, who’s a citizen and who’s not a citizen,” said documentarian Ric Burns, who made the film with Li-Shin Yu.

WASHINGTON  — President Donald Trump has warned Congress that he will never sign another foot-tall, $1 trillion-plus government-wide spending bill like the one he did in March. His message to lawmakers in both parties: Get your act together before the next budget lands on my desk.

After a brief government shutdown earlier this year, Democrats and Republicans now agree on the need for budgeting day-to-day operations of government by the old-fashioned way. That means weeks of open debate and amendments that empower rank-and-file lawmakers, rather than concentrating power in the hands of a few leaders meeting in secret.

WASHINGTON | Backchannel with ‘Dracula’ helped free Utah man in Venezuela

WASHINGTON | Backchannel with ‘Dracula’ helped free Utah man in Venezuela

WASHINGTON (AP) — A secret backchannel led by a veteran Republican Senate staffer and a flamboyant Venezuelan official nicknamed “Dracula” broke through hostile relations between the two governments to secure the release of American prisoner Joshua Holt, who traveled to the South American country for love and ended up in jail, without a trial, for two years.

A week ago the chances of Holt’s long ordeal ending any time soon looked slim.

On the eve of Venezuela’s May 20 presidential election, the Utah native appeared in a clandestinely shot video from jail railing against Nicolas Maduro’s government, saying his life had been threatened in a prison riot.

ARCADIA, Calif | Accelerate spurts ahead in stretch to win Grade 1 Gold Cup

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Victor Espinoza shook Accelerate’s neck to encourage him leaving the starting gate. That got the usually slow-breaking horse away in good position.

With pacesetting Dr. Dorr and City of Light going at it up front, Accelerate and Espinoza laid third before rallying in mid-stretch to win the $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita on Saturday by 4 1/4 lengths over Dr. Dorr, trained by Bob Baffert.

PHILADELPHIA | Nola takes no-no into 7th, Phils top Jays and lead NL East

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Aaron Nola took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, Nick Williams hit his third pinch-hit homer of the year in the eighth and the Philadelphia Phillies moved into first in the NL East Saturday with a 2-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Nola did not allow a hit until Russell Martin’s RBI single to left in the seventh, which tied the game at 1. After cruising through the first six innings, Nola came back out to work the seventh after a brief rain delay — the second of the game — and walked Justin Smoak with one out before Martin came through, ending the right-hander’s day.

LAS VEGAS | Defenders as important to Fleury, as he is to Golden Knights

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Marc-Andre Fleury has been the foundation for the Vegas Golden Knights’ run to the Stanley Cup Final.
Yet while he has a 1.68 goals-against average and .947 save percentage, he’ll be the first one in the locker room to credit the defensemen in front of him.

“It’s a team game — win as a team, lose as a team,” said Fleury, who looks to become the 11th goaltender in NHL history to have his name on the Cup at least four times — and the fourth of that group to win with multiple teams.
