NEW YORK | Richard N. Goodwin, White House speech writer, dead at 86

NEW YORK (AP) — Former White House aide and speechwriter Richard N. Goodwin has died.

Goodwin died Sunday evening at his home in Concord, Massachusetts. His wife, the historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, said he died after a brief bout with cancer.

He was a liberal force for President John Kennedy and President Lyndon Johnson who helped develop Kennedy’s “Alliance for Progress” in Latin America and write Johnson’s historic “We Shall Overcome” speech on civil rights.
